Top ten tips for using technology in the classroom

The author of this video, Jose Picardo, used technology well to summarize his ten tips. I, particularly, was interested in Tip Two - Use music more often. I have never used music in the classroom for the simple reason that I was afraid of the Gaza and Gully frenzy and the amount of obscenities and offensive content of 'teens' music but Jose convinced me to try their music. At least my students would have some type of music that does not contain inappropriate matter. I believe that these tips would be useful to the teacher, administrator, reading specialist and of course the student. Let me know if any of these tips were useful to you.

  2. Hi Kathine
    I love your blog
All ten tips given by Jose Picardo were truly fantastic. After Looking at the video, as well as some of the additional sites he referred too, a window was opened and my myopic view of the use of technology in the classroom, was changed. My question has always been: In this age of technology, how am I as an educator going to make the teaching learning- experience more exciting and intriguing for students. These tips will surely be useful.
I don’t want to put a damper on things though, but I have 3 words to say: ARE WE READY? Is our education system here in Trinidad and Tobago ready to use technology to enhance the implementation of the curriculum at ALL levels of learning? Or are we pretending to get ready by sending our teachers on one week IT Workshops during the July-August vacation? Will our teachers be receiving a certificate of participation while going back to the same archaic system of chalk and talk, or sooooorry whiteboard and whiteboard marker? Are these workshops making teachers excited about technology and it usage in the classroom? Will our schools been given the tools that are necessary to implement Picardo’s tips?

  3. Hi Sha
Our schools may not be given these tools this year but you know what-we can make a difference. We can TOGETHER lobby for the resources, the training and the trainers, like these 90 soon to be reading specialists, to be sanctioned by the government. Remember, we have a government for the people and voted in by the people. I say no more. Let's pray!!!!!!

  4. You have to be proactive. Make sure you know how to use these tools effectively before getting them . Here many teachers are techno-neophytes with students who can run rings around them with technology. Equipment sits underutilized in classes because teachers are scared of technology.
Always remember Murphy's Law with technology anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Always have a backup paper lesson for students will not sit quietly while you try to correct an error.

Good advice about the backup. It is a pity though because sometimes you would have created a fantastic lesson with the technology only to be disappointed that the room is not available, there is no electricity, or the media just won't work. It just goes to show that we can't completely throw out the old - maybe there is some truth in the calypso, 'a good working ole thing better than a new thing anytime'.
